Does Kanjily work offline?

Yes. The dictionary, stroke order, flashcards, grammar and lessons work without internet. An internet connection is needed once to download ML Kit models (handwriting, Japanese text recognition, translation) the first time you use those features, and for ads and purchases.

Handwriting, camera or translation does not work

Connect to the internet once so the model can download, and check you have free storage. For the camera reader, allow the Camera permission and use good light with the text in focus. Vertical text is supported; try the vertical mode in the reader if a column is read in the wrong order.

Which languages are supported?

The interface is available in about 70 languages and meanings, lessons and example sentences are translated into them. These translations are machine translations and are labelled as such. Choose your meaning language in Settings.

Pronunciation sounds wrong or missing

Kanjily uses your device's text-to-speech engine. In Android settings, install or update a Japanese voice in the text-to-speech engine, then try again. Text-to-speech may not reproduce pitch accent exactly.

Shadowing does not recognise me

Allow the Microphone permission. This feature uses Android's speech recognition service, which may need internet and may be provided by Google. It checks the words recognised, not your accent. You can skip it and still use the rest of the app.

Are the mock exams official JLPT or JFT-Basic?

No. They are original, unofficial practice material and score estimates are only a guide.

Reminders do not arrive

Allow notifications for Kanjily, and on phones with aggressive battery saving (Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, Huawei and others) set Kanjily to unrestricted battery use.

Backup and moving to a new phone

Create a backup file in the app and save it where you like; on the new phone, restore from that file. We do not hold your data.

Premium, restore and cancel

Restore: Settings → Restore purchases (same Google account).
Cancel: Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Kanjily. Lifetime is a one-time purchase.
